- Do I need a referral to be seen under DVA?
- Not for general dental treatment. Book directly and mention your card. A referral is only relevant where treatment falls to someone outside general practice, and we would arrange that with you.
- Will I have to pay anything up front?
- For eligible treatment, generally nothing at all — we bill the department directly and there is no claim for you to lodge. If any part of what you need falls outside your entitlement, you are told what it is and what it costs before it is booked.
- What is prior approval and how long does it take?
- Some treatments — commonly crowns, bridges and dentures — need the department to approve them before they are provided. We prepare and submit that on your behalf. It adds time between the consultation and the treatment appointment rather than to the appointment itself, and we will tell you at the consultation if it applies.
- I hold a White Card. Is my dental treatment covered?
- Where it relates to a condition the department has accepted as service-related, yes. Bring the card and any acceptance documentation, and we will confirm your entitlement before anything is scheduled rather than assume it.
- Can my partner be treated under my card?
- No. Entitlement attaches to the cardholder. Your partner is very welcome as a private patient, and we can book you both in consecutively so it is one trip.
- I have not seen a dentist since I was serving. Where do we start?
- With an examination, X-rays and a written plan in order of priority. Nothing is treated on the day unless you are in pain and want it dealt with, and there is no commentary on how long it has been. Tell reception when you book so we allow a longer first appointment.
