Teeth Whitening: Which option is right for YOU…?

These days its not just people on the television or in the movies that have perfect white teeth. Everyone wants a brighter, whiter smile. Having whiter teeth has been shown to not only make you look younger, but also more attractive, and, as research states, more employable! So how do you decide which type of whitening is the best and most effective for you and your smile.

Teeth whitening toothpastes, strips and products.

Non-professional teeth whitening treatments are also known as over the counter products, such as strips and toothpaste. These products vary in their price, difficulty of use and effectiveness. Whitening toothpastes are effective for removing surface stains from the teeth, but they can’t change the natural tooth colour. Those who have noticeable stains from fizzy drinks, coffee, or cigarettes can expect visible changes with regular use of a quality whitening toothpaste. However, if your discoloration runs deeper, there are other whitening products that can better bring about the changes you’re after.

Impression tray whitening

Tray whitening makes a good choice for those people who like to do things themselves. Plastic bleaching trays are made that fit over the user's upper and lower teeth. To perform treatments, the user places whitening gel in the trays and then seats them over their teeth. The trays are then worn for a prescribed period of time (often multiple hours per day, or else overnight), for a series of days or weeks, as the effects of the whitening process gradually take place.

Professional in Chair Teeth Whitening

Philips Zoom professional whitening is a fast, effective and safe way to whiten your teeth to a really high, long lasting standard. Results from professional treatments can be immediate (up to 8 shades whiter in 45 minutes), and because a dental professional is involved, the process is safe, reliable and hassle free.

The complete procedure takes less than an hour, but a regular teeth cleaning is recommended prior to the actual Zoom teeth whitening session. The procedure begins with a short preparation to cover the lips and gums, leaving the teeth exposed. The dentist or dental assistant then applies the Zoom hydrogen peroxide whitening gel, which works together with the Zoom light to penetrate the teeth and break up the stains and discoloration. The gel remains in place for 15 minutes while the light is activated. During this time, you can relax. The gel is applied for three to four 15-minute sessions of light activation.

At the end of treatment you will be given a Zoom home-use touch-up kit that includes custom-fitted whitening trays. Follow your dentist’s instructions for when and how to use this touch-up kit.
